I really, really enjoyed this series and didn’t even know that Bones, the TV show was based off a series and that this one was essentially a spin-off version that featured Temperance’s niece, Tori Brennan. I used to watch Bones back when I had a lot of time but I stopped after like 5 seasons or so because it was becoming too long. I’m not even sure if the season ended or if it’s still going…I just checked – apparently it’s still running and its only season 12 now. Damn, that’s a very long show.

Anyways, I enjoyed Bones for the few months that I binged watched it and I was pretty psyched to read the Virals series especially after I found out the connection. I was definitely able to tell that this series was similar to Bones in that both of them are highly scientific with a lot of terminology. Thankfully, unlike Bones, this one was more geared towards the YA crowd so there were a lot of good explanations especially when they discussed something technical.

The one thing I was amazed throughout the books was that despite the character’s tender age (all 15-16 years old), they were all incredibly smart (except for maybe Ben, now that I think of it…). Shelton was more tech smart, Hiram was on the science stuff with Tori also on the science stuff but more towards blood/experiments due to her relationship with Temperance. They all worked incredibly well together and honestly, even without their flare powers, a lot of the puzzles were easily cracked by them especially in the third book, Code.

I think my favorite book out of the entire series was probably Seizure with the whole treasure hunting thing. There were definitely a number of times in the book where I was a little skeptical about how well they managed to evade some traps set up from hundreds of years ago. However, they are also incredibly resourceful and intelligent so I guess it’s not entirely out of the norm. The first book, Virals, was also interesting because it’s how everything started and the cold case murder mystery was especially interesting to me.

The dynamic between the four – Tori, Ben, Shelton and Hiram – were interesting. I was a little surprised at how close they were because in the first book, Tori described that she was mostly only friends with them because they were the only teenagers/kids living on their otherwise deserted island. However, it seemed that in reality, the dynamic was that Tori was always the leader with the boys following her every word even before the pack was formed. I’m not sure if I liked Tori that much, to be honest, because she seemed incredibly bossy. This was especially true when Shelton or Hiram didn’t really want to do something like breaking and entering but would be pressured by Tori. Plus, in the last two books, she became incredibly more and more annoying with her girly thoughts between Chance and Ben. To be honest, I thought after the first kiss, the decision was made but then she kept going back and forth between the two that even the two boys plus Shelton and Hiram were getting distracted with all the bickering and fist punches. I understand that she’s a teenage girl and they tend to be confused with the opposite gender because I know I was but for someone who is so smart with extra abilities, she was quite slow in this aspect.

Overall, I did really, really enjoy the series. I liked the adventure and even the ending was nice. It was realistic and it made a lot of sense. However, there was that last paragraph that made me rethink a few things…

Code A Virals Novel Kathy Reichs Books Reviews

Interesting, but you need to concentrate
Love this series as much as the Bones series. These teens are smart, funny and so creative. They are always up to their eyeballs in mischief trying to solve a mystery just like Aunt Tempe. Highly recommend all the Viral books to teens and adults for an entertaining fast paced read. Cannot wait until the new book is released. Of course, I pre-ordered it!!
There is a strong possibility that I may be simply fascinated with Kathy Reichs and now her son. This series are such great books, right up there with the Temperance Brennan novels. Indeed so because these books are about the "strange" happenings with her great niece Tory. Tory is as fearless as her great aunt and gets into just as much trouble but unlike Aunt Tempe, she still has to answer to her dad. Great Read!
I started reading the viral books but I find myself rolling my eyes through each one. The stupidity of the characters to keep things from the dumb adults is wearing thin. Tory is portrayed as a strong female and her Male counter parts look to her for guidance but she can't seem to stand up for herself when it comes to Whitney. I know its supposed to be a teen book but the actions of these teenagers are unbelievable. I hope the character development improves.
The action never stops in this science fiction thriller series. This time Tory and the other Virals find themselves in a race to solve the clues left by the Gamemaster before he unleashes a terrible tragedy. It begins innocently when Hi buys a metal detector and begins geocaching. The kids discover a hidden box Loggerhead Island that begins a treasure hunt with codes, clues from chemistry, and other clues to test their abilities. They need to keep the game secret or face serious consequences.

Meanwhile, Tory is still being dragged into becoming a debutante by her father's girlfriend Whitney. The current dilemma is choosing the boy to escort her when she is presented. She is torn between golden boy Jason and her friend Ben who is also one of the Virals. The two boys definitely do not get along and, in fact, have a couple of fistfights during this story. Tory is fourteen and has never really had a boyfriend. Despite being precocious and mature for her age, she isn't quite ready for that.

Speaking of Whitney, she is gradually moving stuff into Tory's father's home and trying to become Tory's best friend. Tory doesn't really get along with her and she certainly isn't thinking of Whitney as the one to replace the mother she lost in a drunk driving accident a year earlier. Tory throws a tantrum when her father Kit announces the Whitney will be moving in which makes her seem like a more realistic 14-year-old.

To complicate matters even more, Chance has been released from the mental hospital he was in during the last book and is determined to find out what is going on with the Virals. He is aided by Madison who one of the mean girls at school and who witnessed Tory flaring and is now convinced she is possessed.

This story sees the Virals learning more about their new powers and also sees a betrayal by one of the kids. I couldn't put this fast-paced adventure down and loved it.
I like Kathy Reichs books but this is different. Rather than being about Temperance Brennan it's about her niece. That's OK but "flaring" because of a virus left me a bit cold. I didn't find it believable and it was a too easy way to deal with problems in the plot. Further, the group found a hard disc with a possible solution to their problems but, after the finding it, it was not mentioned again. I assume we will have to wait for another book for this to be taken up. That's not my idea of good writing. If I buy a book I want all the loose ends tied up.

Kathy Reichs should go back to what she does brilliantly.
